Events not to be missed

Valle d'Aosta offers a wealth of events whose roots are deeply embedded in ancient local traditions. Undoubtedly the most important, and the one that best reflects the character and folklore of this valley, is Fiera di Sant'Orso Craft Fair, which goes back over one thousand years. On the 30th and 31st January the streets of the old city centre are lined with stalls displaying the wooden works of art of local artists and sculptors.

Our region also offers a wide choice of cultural events: visits to archaeological sites, the numerous castles and fortifications such as Forte di Bard, which hosts a variety of events including exhibitions of ancient, modern and contemporary art, photography, in addition to theatrical and musical performances.

The entire archaeological area surrounding the Roman Theatre becomes the enchanting backdrop for Aosta’s Christmas Market that is held from 3rd December to 8th January 2017.

For those interested in gastronomy and tempted by local culinary specialities, there are countless festivals and country fairs to explore, where you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and wine on offer, such as the festival of Jambon alla Brace (char-grilled ham) in Saint-Oyen and Festa del Lardo (Lard Festival) in Arnad

Autumn Events

Autumn is when Valle d'Aosta celebrates its most widely cultivated fruit. On the first Sunday of October, the "Festa delle Mele" (Apple Festival) is held in Gressan. Here you have the chance to sample scores of tasty specialties made with different varieties of apple, including jellies, fruit juices, cider and countless tempting sweetmeats.

Those who want to feel the true alpine atmosphere must experience the yearly “désarpa”– one of the central folkloristic events held in the region. After spending the long summer months high up in the alpine pastures, under the shadow of the highest peaks of Europe, on the 29th September the cattle are brought down to the valley cowsheds. Each year this alpine transhumance is a meaningful celebration for the entire local population.

Valle d'Aosta’s Osservatorio Astronomico (Astronomical Observatory) will take you on a journey into the cosmos. This unique building containing an amazing variety of instruments and equipment is one of its kind. Educational activities involving history, geography and art designed to spread high quality astronomical information will take you on an unforgettable multi-sensory journey.
